W3C Compliance

W3C stands for World Wide Web Consortium. Since 1994, the W3C has provided the guidelines by which web sites and web pages should be structured and created.

The Importance of a Properly Coded Website

Compliance with W3C standards a mark of diligence on the part of the website developer. It also assures cross-browser compatibility (for browsers that adhere to the rules). It other words, the website will display properly in all major web browsers.

Another benefit (and this is a big one) is that it means search engines will crawl the website and not "halt" because of "fatal" errors within the website. Fatal being a HTML tag or other element so grossly misplaced or in non-compliance the search engine spider doesn't know how to handle the code, or where to go from here, and therefore stop indexing the page. A search engine friendly website is imperative to having a chance at a decent ranking.
